Jonathan Bernau

Jonathan Bernau

4th & 5th Grade Teacher

As the oldest of nine children, Jon Bernau was the first to experience a rather unique family tradition. When the Bernau children reached their early teens, their father (a Lutheran pastor) and mother (a teacher and stay-at-home mom) presented them with a choice.

“After we were confirmed, our parents told each of us we could attend Bible class or teach Sunday school,” Jon recalls. “Every single one of us chose to teach. We liked working with the younger kids.” He didn’t stop there.

Since 2006, Mr. Bernau has taught at Lutheran schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Utah and Michigan. He came to St. John in 2021 and is pleased with the team environment he’s found at St. John.

“I feel more comfortable here than anyplace I’ve been,” he says. “The teachers constantly work together to help students. We bounce ideas off each other all the time.”

Wherever Mr. Bernau has gone, he’s brought a wide range of interests and skills with him. Among other things, he’s been an audio technician, a robotics mentor and a bicycle mechanic. Mr. Bernau has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Concordia University-St. Paul, Minnesota.
