Sara McPike
Middle School Religion
A pastor’s daughter, she attended SJLS from K-8. Along the way, she took part in the church youth group, led by the then-deaconess at St. John, Kim Bueltmann, who made a lasting impact on her life.
“I always knew I wanted to do something in the church,” she says. “The summer after sixth grade, I knew I wanted to be a deaconess.”
She’s got the credentials, completing her deaconess internship and earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology and Professional Studies from Concordia University-Chicago. And in her aftercare work at SJLS, she’s getting valuable experience for her future career.
“It’s all about developing relationships with the kids,” she says. “It’s been a blessing getting to know their personalities and what makes them tick.”
She strives to balance her roles as an authority figure and a motivator. To that end, she looks to her role model.
“That’s what Kim did for us,” she says. “She kept us on task, but she also made it fun. That’s what I try to do.”
